OpenAI was founded in December 2015 by prominent tech figures including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, with a mission to develop safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI) for all humanity.
Initially created as a nonprofit organization, OpenAI transitioned to a capped-for-profit model in 2019 to attract investments while limiting profit returns.
Microsoft has been a major investor in OpenAI, investing $1 billion in 2019 and another $10 billion in 2022, integrating OpenAI's technologies like GPT into its products.
OpenAI's ChatGPT system was trained on an enormous 45 terabytes of text data, including about 300 billion words and 8 million Wikipedia articles, enabling it to generate human-like conversations.
